Why is CC0 (Public Domain) Content Important?

By mikegood on October 2, 2022October 2, 2022
As a creator, you know the importance of being able to find high–quality resources that you can use freely in your work.

CC0 is a public domain dedication that allows creators to waive all copyright and related rights to their work. This means that anyone can use, modify, and distribute the work without restriction.

CC0 is an incredibly powerful tool for creators because it allows you to build upon the work of others without worrying about copyright infringement. It also means that your work can be used by others without permission, which can help to spread your ideas and reach a wider audience.
The public domain is an important part of the creative commons, and I believe that more creators should take advantage of it. If you‘re looking for some great cc0 resources, I recommend checking out the following websites:

Here, at cc0music.wtf our goal is to provide a similar resource to the above listed libraries, and become a well-know source for public domain music. This project was funded by the Lil Nouns Dao to help proliferate Nouns and CC0 content. For more information on Lil Nouns visit lilnouns.wtf.

Is CC0 just music and art?

CC0 isn’t just video, images and music — It can be bodies of text, plays, games, or even code written by a developer. The CC0 movement is about building and allowing others to build upon existing work and infrastructure.

This is becoming more and more important as we build a decentralized world, inside of web3. To quickly build, share, and iterate has been key for the expansion of web3, and its underlaying infrastructure.

Why would someone make their work CC0?

There are many reasons one might designate their work as CC0, or Public Domain.

  1. Allow others to build upon ones existing work.
  2. To raise awareness or bring attention to their work or themselves as a creator.
  3. To add to available resources for creators.
